BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2013 STATEMENT BY U.S. SENATOR LAMAR ALEXANDER (R-TN)
“My good friend, the late Alex Haley, the author of Roots, celebrated this month by telling school children wonderful stories about Americans who have participated in the struggle for equality. I believe we should put the teaching of American history and civics back in our schools so our children can grow up learning what it means to be an American, and marking Black History Month each year is one of the best ways to learn about our country—through the stories of African Americans who have shaped our nation.”
