NAPPY HEADED HO’S COMMENT PROMPTS A CALL TO ACTION By Sharon Carson, Publisher African American Times News (In case you have not heard that radio shock jock Don Imus called the women`s basketball team at Rutgers University "nappy headed ho`s". You can watch the video on YouTube via this link: http://www.youtube.com
As a Black woman and publisher of the African American Times Online, I was extremely offended to say the least and cannot believe that anyone with a National radio program that is syndicated to millions of listeners would call Black women nappy headed ho`s without thinking that there would be repercussions. I am sure that this individual thought that a simple apology days after making the remark would suffice a tolerant people. Our tolerance for injustice, however, cannot be that high.
This incident crosses the line of insensitivity and prompts a call to action. We must mount a massive email campaign to MSNBC who carries the Imus show to let them know that we will boycott the show and all sponsors of the show as long as Imus is on the air. We will also serve notice to politicians and guest on the Imus show that we will not have short memories as voters and consumers if they choose to appear as guest on the show.
Oftentimes we as Black people feel that our views are not being heard in America even though our annual spending power has now reached approximately 679 billion dollars. As Black women we control most of this spending power and we cannot afford to continue to pay for music that calls us b’s and ho`s or support T.V. and radio programs or sponsors of those programs that insult our ethnicity and femininity.
This publication prompts a call to action for Black males and females as well as any other ethnicity that finds the comments made by Don Imus offensive to Black women. There are now over 10 million African Americans online. We must mount a massive email campaign by sending an email to MSNBC letting them know that the comments of Don Imus and his subsequent apology are not acceptable to us. We will boycott the program and all sponsors associated with the program as long as Don Imus is on the air.
The call to action should include us asking all those on our email lists to send the same message to MSNBC and to ask all those on their email lists to do the same. If we speak together our voices that often seem like one crying in the wilderness will be heard as a shout. On this issue - Let’s start shouting! This publication will attempt to obtain a list of sponsors of the program and will publish them at a later date.
