MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES FOUNDATION NAMES MIKE CONLEY, SEAN TUOHY AND PETE PRANICA TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS

MEMPHIS, Tennessee, April 6, 2011— The Memphis Grizzlies Foundation announced today that Grizzlies guard Mike Conley and the Grizzlies television broadcast duo of Sean Tuohy and Pete Pranica have been named as the newest board members of the Grizzlies Foundation.  The Grizzlies Foundation also announced that Elliot Perry has been named the Vice President of the Board of Directors.

The three new board members were selected because of their commitment and support of youth mentoring.   In their role, each will provide leadership and direction to the Foundation and actively participate in Grizzlies Foundation initiatives and events. Perry’s appointment was made because of  the leadership he has provided to the Grizzlies Foundation and the prominent role he has played with the Grizzlies TEAM UP Youth Mentoring initiative.

Conley is one of two Grizzlies players to ever join the Grizzlies Foundation Board of Directors, the first being  Pau Gasol, who served on the board during his tenure in Memphis.  Conley has been an active participant at in the Grizzlies TEAM UP Mentoring initiative throughout his NBA career.  For four years, he has served as a host for Staxtacular, an annual event coordinated by the Foundation that supports the Stax Music Academy.  The Academy provides mentoring, music education and exciting performance opportunities designed to enhance students’ music abilities and academic leadership skills.

“In our Grizzlies family, Mike, Sean and Pete are true champions for youth mentoring. Their personal experiences, insights and outreach will bring the Grizzlies TEAM UP initiative to greater prominence and will make the Foundation stronger than ever before,” said Jenny Koltnow, Executive Director of the Grizzlies Foundation.  “Thanks to the groundwork laid by team owners like Elliot Perry, we believe that these additions to our board will increase interest and participation in Grizzlies Foundation endeavors and help us reach many more kids in the Memphis area.”

An advocate for the Grizzlies Foundation since its inception, Tuohy and his family’s dedication to mentoring and reaching out to children is unparalleled, as was depicted in the major motion picture “The Blind Side.”   Pranica’s passion for youth mentoring is evidenced by his frequent participation in Grizzlies TEAM UP events and partner programs, frequently volunteering at events and serving as a moderator for various Foundation functions.

An example of the power of mentoring, Perry has inspired thousands by sharing his personal story, frequently crediting his mentor, Michael Toney, for his experiences and success. His continued leadership has galvanized countless individuals and organizations to support the Grizzlies TEAM UP initiative by becoming volunteer mentors and supporting Foundation partners.

Expanding youth mentoring in Memphis has been a top priority of the Grizzlies Foundation since its inception in 2004.  Through the Grizzlies TEAM UP Initiative, the Grizzlies Foundation engages individuals and organizations from across the Mid-South in mentoring young people by hosting special events, developing outreach programs and initiating public awareness campaigns.  In 2011, the Grizzlies Foundation launched Grizzlies TEAM Mentoring, a program which matches teams of 3 adult mentors to groups of 9 students, which is currently being piloted at two Memphis public charter schools. The Grizzlies Foundation recently launched a website teamupmemphis.org, which offers online sign-up and comprehensive resources for prospective and current mentors, mentoring programs and individuals and organizations interested in youth mentoring.
