Boaters Have Help They Can Call for On-the-Water Breakdowns

(Fishing Wire) PROVINCETOWN, Mass., - Boaters and anglers near the tip of Cape Cod now have a reliable helping hand to call when they break down on the water. Captain Francis Santos of Flyer's Boat Shop on Provincetown Harbor has opened TowBoatUS Provincetown, which provides on-the-water assistance and tows back to a launch ramps, moorings or marinas. Managing the on-the-water towing company is Santos' son, Capt. Noah Santos, who is the third generation of the Santos family to work in the family's businesses.

"We have a short season, but a busy one," said Noah, who is also US Coast Guard licensed. "Most people call us for assistance when they run out of fuel, damage drive gear or prop while running in the shallows, or have an engine breakdown." Recreational boaters and anglers can call the on-the-water towing company 24-hours a day at 508-272-7839, through the BoatUS toll-free Dispatch Service at 800-391-4869, or by hailing on VHF radio channel 16.

Like an auto club, BoatUS offers "Unlimited" on-the-water towing plans for saltwater boaters and anglers for just $149 a year which includes BoatUS membership. Without a towing plan, boaters face costs that nationally average about $600 per incident.

TowBoatUS Provincetown has a 25-foot Parker response vessel, ready to go at a moment's notice and fully rigged for marine towing and salvage work, including extra fuel, engine fluids, pumps, dive gear and battery "jump packs" to handle dead batteries. The towboat can be identified its distinctive red hull, white bow stripes and "TowBoatU.S." lettering along its sides.

The company is the eleventh TowBoatUS port in Massachusetts and joins neighbors in Boston, Scituate, Onset, Falmouth and Bass River. To see the new location on a map go to the BoatUS Member Services Locator.

All of the towing ports are part of the country's largest boat towing program, BoatUS Towing Services, with over 600 towboats servicing hundreds of ports and waterways coast to coast. The towing program is just one service offered by BoatUS - Boat Owners Association of The United States - the nation's leading advocate for recreational boaters providing its half-million members with government representation, consumer programs and money-saving services.
