Memphis Mother Awaiting Kidney Transplant

Memphis, Tenn., Sept. 24, 2013 – In 1998, Wakeya Luckey, of Memphis, lost her first child due to high blood pressure and other pregnancy complications. Although she was blessed with a son the following year, she continued to battle health problems, which have worsened over the years.

Luckey, 34, now suffers from high blood pressure, end-stage renal disease and congestive heart failure. She has undergone multiple surgeries, experienced numerous seizures, and she suffered a blood clot in her brain in 2007.

Doctors now say a kidney transplant is essential to her survival.

The average kidney transplant costs approximately $250,000. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, she still faces significant medical expenses related to the surgery. She will need a lifetime of follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. These medications are very costly, and they’re as important to her survival as the transplant itself.

To overcome these financial challenges, Luckey and her family turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps transplant patients raise funds to pay for medical expenses.

“My heart goes out to Wakeya,” said Claire Prince, NFT fundraising consultant. “I know she wants nothing more than to be there for her son for many more years. At NFT, we’re dedicated to helping her raise the funds she needs to focus on her health and her family, not her medical expenses.”

Saturday, Oct. 5, beginning at 8 a.m., volunteers are holding a car wash in the parking lot of AutoZone, 3343 Winchester Rd. in Memphis.

Car washes will be $5, or $10 for both an interior and exterior cleaning.

For more information, please contact Luckey at 901-335-5979  or wakeyaluckey@yahoo.com or Demetria Aldridge at 901-859-1135    dlluckey81@yahoo.com.

If you prefer to mail your contribution, please send your gift to the NFT Tennessee Transplant Fund, 5350 Poplar Avenue, Suite 430, Memphis, TN 38119.
