The Antiquated Nature of Race

By Jay Thomas Willis, Correspondent/Columnist

Black Information Highway

Chicago, IL, May 19, 2012 - The notion of race is a deception. Who knows when this deception started to penetrate the mind of individuals all over the world, but must have been many years ago, probably as soon as the so-called races began to interact. Since then, various groups have had a need to see themselves as superior and others as inferior.

No one has ever been clear or consistent about what distinguishes one race from another. In fact, most anthropologists deny that there is any such realistic category of man as race. We also know today that some people who identify as one race or the other might really be a mixture of so-called races.

There was a time when one drop of Black blood would put you in the Black-race category. Such ideas have loosened up in modern times. We are more likely today to apply the concept of “mixed race.” At one time there was an elaborate mathematical expression used to determine the exact percentage of Black blood. In slavery the slave masters encouraged this idea so they could have more slaves, and in modern times Black leaders encouraged it because they wanted to have more Blacks in their ranks.

This one-drop rule has not been applied uniformly or consistently. George Zimmerman, the man who killed Trayvon Martin in Florida, supposedly had a partially Black great-grandmother on his mother’s side. That would make him have some Black in his background. He might more appropriately be called a White-Hispanic-Black.

We know there are few pure races left in the world—if there ever was any. We also know that some individuals with a small amount of Black blood pass for white on a daily basis, while some are content to be denoted as Black. Human beings are usually so close in morphology that similar genetics make it difficult to differentiate between different forms.

Some say when Europeans went to explore lands where some of the darker races resided, they found that when they had babies by the natives, the babies were usually of a darker hue than themselves. They shouldn’t have been surprised. To my thinking the babies weren’t necessarily darker, but simply more of a mixture of the two. That is the way nature and genetics work. You couldn’t expect that the baby would be totally European. That would defy all the laws of genetics.

We are not likely to see George Zimmerman as Black, but we can see how our old concept of race is antiquated. Race is no longer a simple matter of Black and White.

Whereas it is not felt that the same factors involved in Black-on-Black crime are involved in this situation, but could it be that Zimmerman resented the small percentage of Black blood running through his veins enough to lash out at Trayvon Martin?

Our exposure in an alien society has taught us to have self-hate for our own physical characteristic. We were conditioned to hate ourselves because we were told we were treated this way because we were Black and inferior. Consequently, we learned to despise things Black. Through having this self-hate we’ve learned to dislike and strike out at everything that looks like us.

This self-hate desolates Blacks and leaves us self-destructive as well as destructive toward each other. This causes us to turn on ourselves and perpetuate all manner of inappropriate behavior on each other and the community. Blacks take everything thrown at them by other groups and turn the hostility, anger, frustration, and devastation right back at each other.

It is important everyone acquire the necessary skills and learn to cope with diversity; this will help prepare us for the future. Interpersonal, educational, and technological skills will be more important in the future than race for a diverse community, educational system, and workplace.

If we’re to function better as a society we must lose our ethnocentric tendencies, and begin to value all human beings.
