Let Bells Ring on August 28, 2013 to Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington

By Arelya J. Mitchell, Publisher/Editor-in-Chief

The Mid-South Tribune and the Black Information Highway

The King Center and other civil rights organizations are asking citizens of these United States of America to ring bells on Wednesday, August 28th at 3:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington. In commemoration of that day in 1963 when thousands of African Americans and other citizens of these United States of America marched in peaceful protest against the world’s richest nation which had bastardized its own Bill of Rights because it chose to be silent on the belief that “All men are created equal and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.” BECAUSE it ignored that these truths were ‘self-evident’. BECAUSE it chose Jim Crow.

It chose not to acknowledge that it was a nation birthed from slavery and immigration. And that this seed first came from Native Americans who were ‘thanks’ giving.

It was a nation that so smoothly chose to violate in earnest its own credo of a Preamble to a Constitution most nations in a 20th Century still envied as the world watched thousands of its Black citizens gather at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial on that hot August day in 1963 to demand the same promise which had been signed, sealed and delivered to others because of their color. BECAUSE of their race. BECAUSE of their creed.

Heat rose to their brows not from a sun beating down but from being beaten down.

Sweat whipped black backs on that August day in 1963 not from a sun but from being denied. FROM being smothered under thick black quilts of injustice, of prejudice, of indignation.   And FROM black muted rage.

This was a nation that created a Preamble which could charm those seeking to Pursue Happiness to come. To come and break ground and break bread for all to share in a pot that was mythically  melting—even with those who came against their will to this Land where God shed His Grace, to this Land of Spacious Skies, to this Land of Beautiful simply called ‘America’.

On August 28th 1963, an Emancipation had yet to be fully Proclaimed.

However, it should be with some shame on August 28th 2013 that the agenda remains the same as it was in 1963. Will 2013 complete what was started in 1963? Or will the agenda remain the same in 2063?

Yet in spite of it all… in spite of repeated history and reneged on promises…

We must echo the past and move forward as ‘One Nation under God’ on August 28th 2013 to

“Let Freedom Ring!”

            “Let Freedom Ring!”

            “Let Freedom Ring!”

            And then pause

With a quiet reverent resolve…

            With a quiet reverent resolve…

In remembrance of a ‘King’ whose voice rang out…a half century ago…

“I have a Dream…

            “I have a Dream…

            “I have a Dream…
