Memphis Athletics Receives Academic Services Certification

Memphis, Tenn., May 2, 2011 – The University of Memphis Center for Athletic Academic Service (CAAS) has received certification by the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A).  The U of M is one of 12 programs nationally to receive certification by the organization at this point.

N4A has established a certification program to raise the professional standard among academic support programs and encourage a broader range of understanding of best practices and successful operations.

“We are very proud to be certified by N4A,” said CAAS Director Joe Luckey. “It is a compliment to the efforts of our staff, coaches, student-athletes and members of the Faculty Athletic Committee who participated in the overall process.  We are always looking to improve the services and programming efforts for our student-athletes.  We have already begun responding to the recommendations by our consultant, Dr. Joe Scogin, and are very encouraged with the progress that we have made.”

The purpose of program certification is to verify that an academic support unit can provide a basic set of services to student-athletes as outlined in the N4A guidelines and Code of Ethics. Certification is available for both two-year and four-year colleges and universities. Candidate programs complete a self-study of its operations and undergo a site review of their program. The review at the U of M took place in February.

“We are extremely proud of Dr. Luckey and his staff and all that they do to elevate our academic progress each and every year,” said Athletic Director R.C. Johnson. “To be one of such a limited number of schools to have received certification already is a tribute to the dedication of our academic staff, our coaches and our student-athletes.  We take academics very seriously at the University of Memphis, and this certification reaffirms that we strive to develop the total student-athlete.”

The peer review was executed by Dr. Joe Scogin, Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services at the University of Missouri.
