Titans End Season with 16-10 Win Over Texans

The Mid-South Tribune and the Black Information Highway

Nashville, TN ,  Dec. 29, 2913- Coming off a 20-16 win last week in Jacksonville, Tennessee looked to finish the season strong. Despite low attendance, they did just that.

Texans were able to get on the board first with a 3-yard touchdown by Jonathan Grimes, his first career NFL touchdown.

The Titans were unable to score until their first possession in the second quarter when Rob Bironas completed a 42-yard field goal attempt. Bironas added another field goal two possessions later, this time from 55 yards out, a season best for the Titans’ kicker.

Akeem Ayers stripped the ball from Grimes in the second quarter and Zach Brown was able to recover for the first of four turnovers forced by the Titans. The second turnover came on the Texans first possession in the third quarter. Ayers intercepted a pass intended for Ryan Griffin that bounced off the facemask of Bernard Pollard.

Five plays later, Chris Johnson converted the intercepted pass into an 11-yard touchdown putting the Titans up 13-7 at the end of the third. It was Johnson’s 50th career touchdown.

Texans fumbled the ball at the start of the fourth quarter and Sammie Hill recovered, giving Tennessee the ball on the Houston 33 yard line. Unable to convert the turnover into a touchdown, the Titans sent Bironas on for a 37-yard field goal to advance their lead 16-7.

Johnson fumbled the ball on the Titans’ next possession but was able to recover the ball after a lucky bounce.

The Texans’ kicker Randy Bullock added a 19-yard field goal to put Houston within seven.

The final play of the game was an intercepted pass by Michael Griffin intended for Houston’s Keshawn Martin. Titans were able to take a knee and let the clock run out for the 16-10 victory.

Over the next few days, Coach Munchak will know whether he will remain the head coach and be able to continue what he started with organization. In the postgame interview he seemed confident in the progress of the team and moving forward.

“I feel good about this team and how we’ve grown as a team throughout the year,” said Munchak. “I think I have a good feel for what needs to be done…I don’t think we’re far off.”

Noteworhty:
Chris Johnson had 27 carries for 127 yards and recorded over 1,000 yards for the season . He became the sixth player in NFL history to run for at least 1,000 yards in each of his first six seasons.
Kendall Wright led the team this season with 94 catches and 1,079 receiving yards. His reception totals rank fifth in franchise history for a single season.
Delanie Walker’s third reception of the game gave him a career-high 60 catches on the season.
Rob Bironas finished the season with 116 points. He made 25 out of 29 field goals and all 41 extra point attempts.
Alterraun Verner became the first Titan since 2010—and the first cornerback since2008—to be elected to play in the Pro Bowl.
