NASHVILLE, TN - Sylvester Croom’s resume boasts highlights such as head coach of Mississippi State University, assistant coach at Alabama—his alma mater— for 11 seasons, and over 17 years within the NFL as a running backs coach, currently with the Tennessee Titans.

In 2007, he was named coach of the year by the American Football Coaches Association and was also named coach of the year by his fellow SEC coaches as well as the Associated Press. There was even an ESPN documentary entitled “Croom” that covered his life before, during, and after his time as head coach of Mississippi State University.

Perhaps one of his greatest known achievements though, is that he was the first African-American to be named head coach in the SEC. Because of this, as well as other achievements, Croom was named one of 40 Alabama pioneers for civil rights by his alma mater.

Recently, Croom was asked to present a scholarship award at a banquet honoring Bishop Bobby L. McCarter of Charity Mission/Fairview Full Gospel Baptist Church. McCarter and Charity Mission/Fairview FGBC annually award scholarships to students in the church and in the community of Crawford, MS.

The Bishop Bobby McCarter Scholarship will be presented by Sylvester Croom on February 8, 2014 at a banquet honoring Bishop Bobby McCarter.  The event will be held at the Bobby L. McCarter Center at Charity Mission/Fairview FGBC, 807 Tarlton Rd. in Crawford, Mississippi. For more information, call 662-272-5355.

“Bishop McCarter helped and assisted me in a lot of ways when I was working in Starkville,” Croom said when asked about the event, “so when he called and asked me to participate, I was glad to do it. The church and Bishop McCarter are always trying to advance the students education because that’s still an area where a lot of kids need help and if I can help, then I want to be a part of it.”

Croom spoke highly of McCarter and Charity Mission/Fairview FGBC. “When I was working at Mississippi State I attended church there. It was very uplifting to me, his (McCarter’s) messages and what he stood for as a man and as a Christian pastor. The church group and the community were very supportive.  I felt like I was a part of that congregation.”

“This will be the first time I’ve had a chance to go back since I’ve left,” Croom stated, “so I’m really looking forward to it.”
